A green roof, also known as a living roof or sustainable roof is a roof or building that is either partially or completely covered with vegetation sitting on top of a waterproof membrane. A green roof has several purposes; for example, absorbing excess rainwater, providing extra insulation, creating an inviting habitat for surrounding wildlife and decreasing the stress of residences surrounding the roof by providing an aesthetically pleasing environment, often lacking in urban areas.
Green roofs are suitable as a retrofit or redevelopment projects as well as specified within the planning stages of a new development. Green roofs are suitable for small domestic flat roof projects or for larger, industrial commercial and municipal buildings.
Green roofs reduce the amount of heat lost through the roof leading to remarkable cost savings. Protecting the outer surface of the building has been shown to be more effective than internal insulation.
BREEAM assesses buildings based on environmental, social and economic sustainability performance. BREEAM rated developments are more sustainable environments that enhance the well-being of the surrounding people, and help protect natural resources.
Green roofs create natural habitat to surrounding wildlife. Even in high-rise urban areas as tall as 19 stories, it has been found that green roofs can attract beneficial insects, birds, bees and butterflies
